Country’s First Space Weather Reading Centre to Be Set up in Kolkata

A brand new feather to be added in the crown of city of joy Kolkata, as a specialized ultra modern centre of excellence in reading weather conditions of the space to provide a support to air traffic on various polar routes to be set up in Kolkata by the middle of 2013. The centre will be the first of its kind in the whole country, as at present there are no such centres across the country.

India’s space science culture has improved a lot in recent times, and this new centre of excellence is a burning example of that. The main focus of the said centre will be on the areas of space weather especially in the gravitational physics and mysterious solar system. Along with that the centre will also study air traffic on polar routes; it would help in the functioning of Global Positioning System (GPS) networks and numerous numbers of mobile satellites, which are already placed in space.

Solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) were two kinds of storms that originated from the Sun itself. These storms exposed flights to huge amounts of radiations over Polar Region. This is a big reason to worry, as it can be very harmful with time.

It has to be mentioned that a few commercial flights, which are operated from the airports of South Asia, Europe and North America generally flew over the Polar Regions to cut short time and distance. It is easily understandable that these flights can be affected by the said radiations, and that may lead to serious trouble.

There are several important factors because of which space scientists felt the importance of setting up this type of centre of excellence. If the weather in the solar system was not well then it would impact the functioning of the satellites in a continuous manner. This could have caused an serious adverse effect on the GPS system and mobile networks.

Union HRD Ministry of India already approved the centre, and it would come up at the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER).
